Knappe 5*
* The fact that Guy is still here releasing shit like this instead of doing better things worldwide is really just laughable. Of course this needed an X Factor performance to guarantee it a top 50 placing though :P
This is just diabolical. The second that little trumpet thing starts I cringe (mostly because it reminds me of the similarly shithouse "Trumpets" [which brings me back to "Guy, what are you doing?"]) and the lyrics are so run-of-the-mill. But what mostly annoys me about this is that the formula is SO DAMN OVERUSED. Especially that crappy elongated "come on home" lyric, which was so obviously used in a million other songs. Oh and the fact that Guy sounds like a stalker in the lyrics can add to the list of negatives.
I have absolutely nothing positive to say about this piece of fucking crap. What's worse is that this has lowered my opinion of Guy which I already found average in the first place. This is his worst effort to date and doesn't deserve any recognition whatsoever (though I have just written a whole two and a half paragraph review about it). At this point I don't even hope for Guy to release something better like "Gold", "Like A Drum" or even better "Art Of Love", but I just hope he falls away into irrelevance just like this song. * This is just not a good song. Full stop. "Like A Drum" was disappointing enough, and I only grew to like that because it was surprisingly well produced for what it is and because it could've been so much worse. But even once it grew on me it was still a disappointment and one of his worst singles, I was very much hoping that it was not a sign of things to come. Fast forward 9 months (seriously I waited 9 months for this?! THIS?!) and we're here. The preview of this was disappointing enough for me, but I tried to be optimistic and hoped for the best when it came to the full product. The full song ended up being worse than I was imagining it would be and it hasn't really improved much since first listen.
There are many issues I have with this. Firstly is the production. It sounds very "Wake Me Up" and "Hey Brother" which just elicits a massive NO! The folkiness is just cheap and cringey and has been done so much in the past year that I'm well and truly sick of it. Then there's that brass that sounds like "Hey Brother". The thought of one of my favourite artists making something that sounds like that piece of shit, it's just really sad. In short, the production on this is vile. Like seriously why would people like this type of shitty production? That's not my only problem. The melody is quite disgusting too, sounding like "We Own The Night", "Que Sera" etc. The post-chorus sounds like multiple things, namely the post-chorus sections of both "We Own The Night" and "Wasted" which is just all kinds of vile. I don't have a major problem with the lyrics, but they're just boring and nothing special so I have no interest in them either. Probably the only saving grace is Guy's vocals in this, which are up the standard that they usually are. But even still it's not enough for me to want to ever listen to it, aside from making this review I have avoided listening to it since its first week of charting.
I think the thing that bothers me the most about this though, is that it just highlights how orgasmic everyone is over the Avicii tracks "Wake Me Up" and "Hey Brother". The former is an okay track, but one that has a lot to answer for as far as I'm concerned. The other, well, probably best to see my review if you aren't already familiar with my views on it. The sooner I hear no more tracks like these the better, as it's quite possibly my least favourite popular music trend ever. At least (assumably) no one on aus-charts likes this, so there's hope with this issue I guess.
It deeply saddens me that I even have to write this, that this thing even exists. 11 years is a long time, and the nostalgia and feelings I have for an artist that I've loved for almost all of the time of my life I've been actively interested music is immense. And all this basically straight after "Armageddon", which is quite possibly my favourite of all his albums? Words can't explain how disappointing that is. I guess it was only inevitable given my ever changing music tastes, especially in 2014 where they have become less pop and artist driven (eg. only one artist has really dominated my music listening habits of 2014, unlike 2013 and years prior. Few pop songs have made the top 10 on my chart this year also) and more nichey. But even with this change, I'd like to still be able to love Guy's music.
Though it's unlikely, I do really hope that this (and "Like A Drum") are not a representation of what's to come with the next album. This is by far his worst single and nothing else comes close to how bad this is. Very happy this missed out on going top 10 and will be his worst performing single chartwise in a while.
Edit: Lucky for me the album was not full of songs like this. This song is absolute garbage and completely joyless for me. Just sounds like a combination of numerous things that I didn't like in the first place. Vile song that I hope I never hear again. Last edited: 13.06.2015 12:58
***** Überraschende Single in meinen Ohren. Trotzdem ist der Track niemals so schlecht, wie er hier dargestellt wird - im Gegenteil! Ich finde das eigentlich sogar recht frisch, warum ich (auch dem Schnitt zuliebe) auf eine knappe 5* aufrunde.
